The Audi A8 has an aluminium space frame (the "Audi Space Frame" or ASF which saves weight and improves torsion rigidity compared to a conventional steel frame. The A8 is usually the lightest all-wheel drive car in the full-size luxury segment, also having best-in-class fuel economy. The the aluminium frame takes an especially qualified technician to repair and requires a specialized aluminium body shop.
The image below shows the lateral roof frame (light blue) is made with a single extruded section; its cross-section changes flexibly from the A-pillar to the C-pillar.
A-Pillar The A-Pillar in many ways is equivalent to that of a human neck line, where the face of the car flows into the body. The A-Pillar is the foremost pillar of the car, it is vertical and supports the windshield from each side.
B-Pillar The B-Pillar strengthens the midsection of the vehicle.
C-Pillar The C-Pillar is the 3rd pillar generally behind the passengers seat, where your rear window ends on the body of your car.
In the image above, you can see some of the A-Pillar structure; the inner Front Pillar, which is a cast piece of Aluminum. The dead give away is the ribs on the front of the door opening. If the piece was stamped you would see a dart or a bead to add strength.
What’s somewhat striking is that even the top U.S. Audi executive, de Nysschen, notes the fact that there is an extensive use of ultra-high-strength steel (UHSS Ultra-High-Strength Steel) within the A4 body structure. The use of the material is absolutely notable, and contributes to a rigid body structure, as well as enhancing safety.
